Spark 100: A tour in celebration of the works and influence of Muriel Spark.
October 20 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm£8 – £13
With your expert Mercat Tours guide, you will get the chance to walk in the footsteps of Spark’s Edinburgh. You’ll hear of the 17th-century merchant who provided for Spark’s education, you’ll visit the stone dedicated to her in Makar’s Court and you’ll see the ‘upraised fingers’ of St. Giles which threatened her observant Sandy.
Discover the real Miss Jean Brodie
In true Spark style, we will leap through time and discuss her Edinburgh life and the city’s lasting effect on her. We will introduce the characters, historical and fictional, which inspired her stories. And you will hear of the locals who paved the way for women writers and famed modern authors who have been inspired by her timeless and witty style.
We’ll show you aspects of the city through the watchful, spy-like eyes of Spark herself; show you where she studied and where she bought the notebooks in which her stories were written. Whether you are looking for an introduction to the woman and her world-renowned work or you are already a Spark devotee join this tour and breathe in Edinburgh’s ‘informed air’ with us.
