Appointment in Arezzo: A Friendship with Muriel Spark by Alan Taylor
November 9, 2017£12.99
Author and journalist Alan Taylor first encountered Muriel Spark when he interviewed her in Arezzo near her home in northern Italy. The year was 1990, and a long-lasting bond was formed.
As a regular visitor, travelling companion, confidant and fellow Scot, Taylor became a close friend to the celebrated author of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in her later years. Spending family holidays in Spark’s home in rural Tuscany and accompanying her on trips abroad, he came to know her well and gained a unique insight into her character and personality.
In a warm and personal, often humorous account, Taylor recalls his friendship with one of Scotland’s greatest writers. His descriptions of the Tuscan countryside, Spark’s idiosyncratic household arrangements, the parties and the travel bring added charm and detail to a touching memoir. What emerges is a colourful portrait of a vivacious, witty, generous and fiercely intelligent woman.
