The elaboration strategies include, for example, the formation of analogies to existing knowledge structures, a link between the newly learned material and everyday examples, the creation of relationships between new knowledge and the content of related subjects, and the devising of specific examples for practical applications. A learner can remember acquired knowledge much better if he links the knowledge with a personal system of terms than if he were to learn everything by heart.
The keyword method
The keyword method is a very efficient technique in acquiring foreign language vocabulary. It works via the sound of a foreign-language vocabulary that is very similar to a word in the mother tongue.
